Indonesia is a country of thousands of islands, languages, cultures and layered histories. For many people in the Indonesian diaspora, travelling here is not simply a holiday. It can be a return to family stories, ancestral places, cultural memory and questions of belonging. GINI Travel currently develops journeys through Java, connecting travellers with local communities, cultural traditions, colonial heritage, food, spirituality and everyday life beyond the usual tourist routes. Our journeys are designed around slower travel, locally rooted partnerships and meaningful cultural exchange. We aim to keep more value within the communities that host us, while creating space for travellers to understand Indonesia beyond resorts and surface-level experiences. We are currently developing Java-based journeys and will gradually expand our roots and cultural travel offer towards the Moluccan Islands.

Indonesia through roots, heritage and everyday life

Indonesia is often reduced to beaches, temples and tropical landscapes. Behind those images lies a country shaped by migration, colonialism, trade, resistance, religion and thousands of distinct cultural traditions.

GINI journeys currently focus on Java, where travellers can experience village life, Javanese philosophy, food traditions, historic cities, spiritual sites and the landscapes that shape daily life.

For travellers with Indonesian heritage, the journey may also include family history, ancestral locations and personal questions of identity.

You do not need Indonesian roots to travel with us. You do need curiosity, humility and respect for the people and places that receive you.

Wherever possible, GINI works with locally owned accommodation, guides, drivers, craftspeople, cooks and community-based initiatives.

We aim to create journeys in which local people are not treated as scenery or entertainment. They are partners, knowledge holders and co-creators of the experience.

Our approach considers not only what travellers see, but also who owns, earns, decides and tells the story.

Every GINI journey includes a 10% impact contribution supporting social, cultural or locally rooted initiatives connected to our wider mission.

As our Indonesia offer grows, we will continue developing journeys through Java and exploring respectful partnerships for future roots and cultural journeys to the Moluccan Islands.
