Srefidensi Mama Sranan is an 11-day cultural group journey through Suriname’s independence, resistance histories, natural landscapes and living communities.
The journey begins in Paramaribo before Srefidensi, Suriname’s Independence Day. This gives travellers time to arrive, settle into the country and prepare for the celebrations on 25 November.
From Paramaribo, we travel through the former plantation landscapes of Commewijne and explore histories of slavery, indentured labour and Maroon resistance. We continue towards Brownsberg and Brokopondo, where rainforest, water and vast inland landscapes introduce us to another side of Suriname.
The heart of the journey is a three-night stay in Boven-Suriname. Travelling by road and river, we spend time in the Maroon interior and learn about living communities, cultural traditions, resistance history, village life and the relationship between people, forest and river.
The journey closes with two comfortable nights in Paramaribo. There is time to rest, reflect, enjoy Surinamese food and take part in a community-based cultural or cooking experience.
GINI founder Virginia Scheele personally hosts the journey, supported by trusted local drivers, guides, cultural hosts and community partners.

Day 1 – 23 NOVEMBER
Arrival in Suriname
Arrive at Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport and transfer to Oxygen Resort in Paramaribo.
The first evening is intentionally gentle. Settle into your room, meet your fellow travellers and receive an introduction to Suriname and the journey ahead.
Depending on arrival times, we come together for a light welcome moment.
Day 2 — 24 November
Paramaribo & Preparing for Srefidensi
Wake up in Paramaribo and begin discovering contemporary Suriname.
The day allows time to recover from the flight, explore the city and prepare for Srefidensi. Depending on the final programme, we may visit local entrepreneurs, cultural spaces or places connected to Paramaribo’s colonial and independence history.
In the evening, we gather for a welcome meal and conversation about Suriname’s road towards independence.
DAY 3 — 25 NOVEMBER
SREFIDENSI
Celebrate Srefidensi, Suriname’s Independence Day.
Suriname became independent from the Netherlands on 25 November 1975. Today, Srefidensi brings together official commemorations, cultural activities, music, food, community and public celebration.
During the day, we explore both the joy and the deeper meaning of independence. What changed in 1975? What colonial structures remained? How do Surinamese people at home and in the diaspora relate to the country today?
The final programme will follow the locally announced Srefidensi activities and may include public ceremonies, performances, cultural events and shared food.
DAY 4 — 26 NOVEMBER
COMMEWIJNE, PLANTATIONS & RESISTANCE
Leave Paramaribo and travel into Commewijne.
The district is known for its rivers, former plantation landscapes and communities shaped by slavery, colonialism, resistance and indentured labour.
Depending on local arrangements, the day may include Peperpot, Mariënburg, Frederiksdorp and the Boni Trail.
Through local interpretation, we connect plantation history to the people who resisted the colonial system and created free Maroon societies beyond its control.
Stay overnight at Frederiksdorp, Peperpot or another carefully selected Commewijne accommodation.
DAY 5 — 27 NOVEMBER
BROWNSBERG, BROKOPONDO & AFOBAKA
Travel south towards Brownsberg, the Brokopondo Reservoir and Afobaka.
Brownsberg serves as an accessible introduction to Suriname’s inland rainforest. Depending on timing, weather and road conditions, the experience may include rainforest walks, views over the reservoir and a waterfall or nature excursion.
The day connects Suriname’s natural beauty with the history and contemporary realities of the Brokopondo district.
After the experience, continue to Brokopondo for dinner and a peaceful evening near the water.
DAY 6 — 28 NOVEMBER
JOURNEY INTO BOVEN-SURINAME
Continue towards Atjoni, one of the main gateways to Boven-Suriname.
From here, travel farther inland by boat. The river journey marks the transition from the more accessible inland landscapes towards the Maroon communities of Suriname’s interior.
Upon arrival, meet the local hosts, learn about community protocols and settle into the rhythm of river and forest life.
Breakfast & dinners are included.
DAY 7 — 29 NOVEMBER
LIVING MAROON CULTURE
Spend a full day learning with local community members.
The programme may include a village walk, Maroon resistance history, traditional governance, forest knowledge, medicinal plants, cooking, craft, agriculture or stories about contemporary life along the river.
The experience approaches Maroon communities as living, developing societies—not as cultures frozen in the past.
Lunch and dinner are included.
DAY 8 — 30 NOVEMBER
RIVER, FOREST & COMMUNITY
A second full day allows us to go deeper than a short inland visit.
Depending on the community and local programme, the day may include another village, a forest walk, river activity, food experience, cultural exchange or community-led ritual.
Any spiritual, ceremonial or ritual element will only be included when initiated and led by the relevant community. It will be approached with respect rather than presented as entertainment.
Lunch and dinner are included.
DAY 9 — 1 DECEMBER
RETURN TO PARAMARIBO
Leave the interior by boat and road and return to Paramaribo.
After several active days, check into Jacana Amazon Wellness Resort or another carefully selected comfortable hotel.
The rest of the day is free for relaxation, the pool, a quiet dinner or personal reflection.
Overnight in luxury accommodation in Paramaribo.
DAY 10 — 2 DECEMBER
COMMUNITY, COOKING & FAREWELL
Spend the final full day connecting with another side of Suriname.
The programme may include a community-based tourism experience in Para or Paramaribo, meeting local hosts, cooks, entrepreneurs or cultural knowledge holders.
Through food, conversation and shared activity, learn how Surinamese histories and traditions continue to live in everyday communities.
There will also be time for rest or shopping before the group gathers for a farewell meal and closing reflection.
Overnight in luxury accommodation in Paramaribo.
DAY 11 — 3 DECEMBER
DEPARTURE
Enjoy breakfast and final free time, depending on the flight schedule.
Transfer to Johan Adolf Pengel International Airport for the journey home.
The programme remains subject to local availability, Srefidensi announcements, weather, road conditions, river levels and community agreements.
Changes may be made to protect the quality, safety and cultural integrity of the journey.
The Paramaribo stays offer greater comfort, while the Maroon interior may include simpler accommodation, limited facilities and closer contact with nature.
Suriname’s distances, roads and river routes require flexibility. Some transfers may take several hours, and timing can be affected by weather, water levels, road conditions or local circumstances.

WHAT IS SREFIDENSI?
Srefidensi means independence in Sranantongo.
Suriname became independent from the Netherlands on 25 November 1975. Each year, the date is marked through official commemorations, cultural activities, music, food and public celebration.
During this journey, Srefidensi is both a celebration and an invitation to reflect on independence, colonial history, migration and contemporary Suriname.
CAN I JOIN WITHOUT SURINAMESE ROOTS?
Yes.
The journey is open to travellers of all backgrounds.
You do not need Surinamese heritage to join. What matters is that you travel with curiosity, humility and respect for the histories and communities you encounter.
IS THIS A ROOTS TRIP?
The journey may carry a personal roots dimension for Surinamese diaspora travellers, but it is not exclusively a genealogy or ancestral-return trip.

The Maroon interior is a deeper cultural and geographical experience involving river travel, community life, resistance history and three nights in Boven-Suriname.
