Atlantic Return is a 10-day African Diaspora Cultural Return journey through Santiago and Fogo.
We move beyond the traditional Cabo Verde beach holiday to explore the islands through colonial memory, Kriolu culture, migration, music, agriculture, volcanic landscapes and everyday community life.
The journey combines shared cultural experiences with genuine space to rest. Some days include a choice between active exploration, cultural immersion and doing nothing at all.
You do not need Cape Verdean roots to join. This is an invitation to explore what returning to African soil can mean when diaspora, identity and belonging are complex.

Day 1 — Inland Santiago
Arrive on Santiago and travel into the island’s peaceful mountain interior. Settle in with a Cape Verdean welcome dinner, local music and an introduction to Kriolu language and culture.
Day 2 — Cidade Velha
After a slow morning, explore historic Cidade Velha, its fortress and stories of African presence, colonial expansion, resistance and Creole identity. Enjoy a locally hosted grogue tasting and optional hike towards the baobab tree.
Day 3 — Choose your rhythm
Join a mountain hike, experience a cultural afternoon in Praia with local artists and musicians, or enjoy a restful day inland. We reunite for dinner.
Day 4 — Fogo
Fly to Fogo, explore São Filipe and travel into Chã das Caldeiras. Settle beneath Pico do Fogo and share dinner inside the volcanic landscape.
Day 5 — Chã community experience
Enjoy a slow morning, visit local vineyards and learn how wine is produced in volcanic soil. Hear stories of eruption, rebuilding and community resilience.
Day 6 — Volcano or agriculture
Choose an optional Pico do Fogo hike or a slower cultural experience with local farmers, coffee producers and agricultural hosts. End with dinner and stargazing.
Day 7 — Tarrafal
Return to Santiago and travel north to Tarrafal. Enjoy a completely free afternoon for the beach, swimming, cafés or rest.
Day 8 — Assomada and the East Coast
After a slow morning, visit Assomada for a short cultural introduction, market time and shopping. Continue to the East Coast for beach time and a shared coastal dinner.
Day 9 — Ocean, memory or rest
Choose an optional boat and cave experience, visit the former Tarrafal Concentration Camp with local historical context or enjoy a full free day. Reunite for a farewell dinner with local music.
Day 10 — Departure
Breakfast and group transfer to Praia International Airport.
Atlantic Return is intentionally spacious.
Expect:

This is not a fast-paced sightseeing tour. It is a culturally immersive journey with time to breathe.
The journey takes place across Santiago and Fogo and includes one domestic return flight.
Some locations have uneven terrain, steep streets or limited infrastructure. Most programme elements are suitable for travellers with average mobility, while longer hikes remain optional.
Accommodation will be comfortable and locally rooted rather than resort-focused. Private and shared-room options may be available.
International flights are excluded. GINI Travel will provide flight guidance once the departure is confirmed.
Travel and cancellation insurance are strongly recommended. Final entry requirements, health guidance, payment plans and packing information will be shared before departure.
The journey will only operate once the required minimum group size has been reached.
Expected price: €2,500 per person, excluding international flights.
The package is expected to include nine nights’ accommodation, domestic return flights between Santiago and Fogo, scheduled transfers, selected meals, cultural experiences, local guides, GINI hosting, pre-departure preparation and an impact contribution.
Final pricing and inclusions will be confirmed before full booking opens.

Cabo Verde’s islands were shaped by African presence, Portuguese colonialism, Atlantic trade, migration and the development of Creole identity.
Atlantic Return explores these histories through places such as Cidade Velha and Tarrafal, alongside Kriolu language, music, food and everyday community life.
Rather than treating heritage as something confined to museums, we explore how history remains alive in families, landscapes, cultural traditions and diaspora connections.

Some days offer parallel pathways: hiking, cultural immersion or rest. This allows travellers with different energy levels and interests to experience the journey in a way that feels sustainable.

Do I need Cape Verdean roots to join?
No. Atlantic Return is created for travellers of African descent, but Cape Verdean ancestry is not required. The journey welcomes people who approach Cabo Verde’s cultures and communities with openness, respect and curiosity.
Is this a retreat or a group tour?
It combines elements of both. There is a structured cultural programme and professional travel organisation, alongside slow mornings, reflection and free time.
Are the hikes compulsory?
No. Longer hikes and active experiences are optional. Alternative cultural or restful pathways will be available on selected days.
Can I join alone?
Yes. The journey is suitable for solo travellers who want the connection and reassurance of a group experience.
Is the trip already confirmed?
Not yet. Atlantic Return is currently in development and will operate once the required minimum number of travellers has been reached.
What does pre-registering mean?
Pre-registering is free and non-binding. It gives you early access to confirmed dates, final pricing, room options and booking information.
Are international flights included?
No. International flights are excluded. Domestic flights between Santiago and Fogo are expected to be included.
Can I pay in instalments?
A payment plan is expected to be available. The exact deposit and payment dates will be confirmed when bookings open.
Is there an extension?
A possible São Vicente and Santo Antão extension is in development and may be offered separately.
