Ancestral Return Ghana is a small-scale cultural journey from 10-17 October 2026, created for travellers who want to experience Ghana through more than sightseeing.
Across eight days, we travel from the coast into Akyem Abuakwa and Ashanti country before ending in Accra. The journey brings together remembrance of the transatlantic slave trade, local heritage and community encounters, African cultural traditions, Pan-Africanism, independence and contemporary Ghana.
The programme intentionally combines guided experiences and shared reflection with space to rest, connect and experience Ghana at a human pace.
This departure takes place alongside a small diaspora delegation, creating opportunities for meaningful exchange while keeping the overall group intimate at a maximum of 8 travellers.

Day 1 — Saturday 10 October | Arrival & Journey to Elmina
Arrive in Accra at approximately 17:15. After collecting our luggage, we begin our private journey towards Ghana’s Central Region and Elmina, followed by dinner and rest on arrival.
Day 2 — Sunday 11 October | Remembrance & Return
Visit Assin Manso Slave River, one of the historically significant sites connected to the final journey of enslaved Africans towards Ghana’s coast. We continue to Elmina Castle for a guided historical visit, remembrance and shared reflection.
Day 3 — Monday 12 October | Akyem Abuakwa Heritage
Travel inland to Asiakwa in Akyem Abuakwa for a locally rooted programme around heritage, community, land and cultural exchange. We close the day with a shared welcome dinner.
Day 4 — Tuesday 13 October | Travel to Kumasi
Continue the Akyem Abuakwa heritage and community program during the morning before travelling onwards to Kumasi, the historic heart of the Ashanti Region.
Day 5 — Wednesday 14 October | Ashanti Heritage
Spend a full day exploring Ashanti cultural and historical heritage. Together with locally rooted hosts and guides, we explore different dimensions of Ashanti history and living culture, with space for traditional and, where appropriate, spiritual perspectives.
Day 6 — Thursday 15 October | Travel to Accra
After breakfast, we begin our journey back towards Accra. Check in and enjoy a free evening to rest, explore or have dinner at your own pace.
Day 7 — Friday 16 October | Independence & Pan-Africanism
Discover Accra through the histories and ideas of Ghanaian independence, Pan-Africanism and contemporary Ghana. Our curated programme is combined with free time to experience the city independently.
Day 8 — Saturday 17 October | Closing & Departure
Enjoy a slow final morning followed by a shared closing reflection. We then transfer to the airport for our approximately 18:35 evening departure.
Travellers who want to remain in Ghana are welcome to arrange an independent extension.
Programme note
The itinerary above is the planned journey for 10–17 October 2026.
As this is a locally rooted programme involving international flights, road travel, community partners, cultural hosts and local availability, the exact order, timings or individual programme elements may change where operationally necessary.
Our preferred routing is to travel directly from Accra to Elmina after arrival on Day 1. If flight delays, baggage handling, traffic or other circumstances make this impractical, we will spend the first night in Accra instead.
In that case, we leave early on Day 2 for Assin Manso and Elmina, with Elmina Castle moving to Day 3 before continuing to Akyem Abuakwa. The remainder of the journey remains largely unchanged.
Any adjustments will preserve the overall character and core experiences of the journey.
Expect an immersive cultural journey with several overland travel days between Ghana’s different regions.
Some days are programme-rich, while others deliberately include slower moments and free time.
The journey engages with histories connected to slavery, forced displacement and colonialism and can therefore be emotionally significant. We balance these experiences with community encounters, cultural heritage, shared meals, contemporary Ghana and moments for reflection.
Ghana is warm and tropical, and road journeys can occasionally take longer than planned. Flexibility is therefore part of travelling through the country.
This is not a mass-market group tour. With a maximum of eight travellers, expect a more personal journey in which local encounters and circumstances can sometimes shape how a day unfolds.
Group size
Ancestral Return has a maximum capacity of 8 travellers.
Accommodation
The journey includes 7 nights in carefully selected accommodation, based on private rooms and including breakfast.
Transport
Private group transportation with a professional driver is included throughout the Ghana programme.
The journey involves several longer road transfers as we travel between the Central, Eastern, Ashanti and Greater Accra regions.
International flights
International flights are included in the €2,650 travel price.
For the main group journey, we will be flying with Brussels Airlines on the recommended connection to Accra. GINI Travel will share the recommended flight details with travellers.
You may also arrive earlier, stay longer or book another suitable airline independently.
If you choose an alternative itinerary, your arrival and departure must connect appropriately with the group programme. Additional accommodation, transfers or other costs resulting from your individual flight choice are at your own expense.
Visa
Travellers are responsible for obtaining the appropriate Ghana visa.
GINI Travel provides guidance with the application process and any supporting travel documentation required from our side. Government and consular fees are not included.
Vaccinations & health
Travellers are responsible for obtaining appropriate professional travel-health advice and arranging any required vaccinations or medication.
Insurance
Adequate travel and cancellation insurance is required and remains the traveller’s responsibility.
Mobility
The programme includes walking, heritage sites, tropical weather and several longer road transfers.

The travel price is €2.608 per person, including international flights.
This includes 7 nights accommodation in a private room with breakfast, private group transportation throughout Ghana, selected meals, cultural and heritage programming, community encounters, local guides and hosts, and GINI Travel coordination before and during the journey.
International flights are booked separately.
For the group journey, we will be flying with Brussels Airlines on the recommended connection into Accra. Travellers who prefer to depart earlier, extend their stay or use another airline may do so independently, as long as their travel plans connect appropriately with the programme.

Ghana’s Central Region holds some of the most significant physical sites connected to the transatlantic slave trade.
At Assin Manso and Elmina, the programme creates room to encounter this history with context and reflection rather than treating these places simply as attractions.
For diaspora travellers in particular, these sites may carry personal or emotional significance.
We therefore approach this part of the journey thoughtfully, with space for individual responses and shared reflection.

Are international flights included?
Yes. International flights are not included in the €2,608 travel price.
For the main group journey, we will recommend a Brussels Airlines connection to Accra so travellers can arrive together and connect smoothly with the programme.
You are welcome to arrive earlier, stay longer or use another suitable airline. Any additional transfers or accommodation required because of an alternative itinerary are at your own expense.
Who is Ancestral Return Ghana for?
Ancestral Return Ghana is created specifically for African diaspora travellers who want to explore and reconnect with Ghana through ancestry, history, heritage, community and Pan-Africanism.
You do not need to be Ghanaian or know exactly where your ancestors came from. The journey welcomes African diaspora travellers from different backgrounds and geographies who feel called to engage with questions of remembrance, identity, belonging and return.
